Katie Melua was discovered by Mike Batt at the BRIT school of performing arts and now boasts three number one albums.

Today we have given her a free reign in the studio with her own box of favourite records, along with those that hold special memories for her.

As a child brought up in iron curtain Georgia, she had to buy bootlegged records – but whose records did she buy?

There’s predictably some great singer-songwriters in her selection, sitting comfortably next to Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra, and you will not be denied a few from Katie too.

Artists include Tracy Chapman, Jamie Cullum, Eva Cassidy, Cat Stevens, David Bowie, Queen, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Bobby Gentry and Joni Mitchell.

Just Katie, a bunch of records and an hour to spend together.

Singer-songwriter Leo Sayer who wrote about Ladbroke Grove and Orchard Road – actually Orchard Road was a made up street and nothing to do with the famous shopping street in Singapore.

You would expect Leo’s influences to include songwriters like Bob Dylan, and there’s plenty of soul too with Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin and Al Green. Leo is in lively mood, infectiously wowing us to love every track he has selected and brought to the studio from his personal collection.

No Aussie accents in this show – we recorded it before he moved down under.
